An invocation to Waitaha,
the original people of Aotearoa.
And pacific, greenstone dreaming.

From three distant and separate lands they came,
to the windswept shores of Aotearoa.
Three braids, three strands to weave a feathered cloak of kinship.
Who lived as a nation for two thousand years in peace.

Who tattoo'ed their faces with spiral pattern,
who harvested fish and birds,
yet increased their number.
Who cut tall trees,
leaving the forest stronger.
Who carved greenstone,
without breaking it's spirit.
who wore robes & shoes of flax.
Who cared for the web of life,
keeping the balance.

Who made offering to,
Tane Mahuta, Hine Moana,
Te Kumera.
Who sang songs of arrival,
at soaring towers of stone,
home to Kahu the eagle.

Standing up at sacred nest the hare and hawk i saw.
Standing up at castle hill to honour Waitaha.
Wind whips tussock grass,
cloud of powa shell.
Tuatara guards greenstone trails,
that lead to hidden realms.
Moon of the berries is waning to clay,
song of Waitaha,
along the white whales way.

Naked to stand at te kohanga,
face wet with tears,
and ask the god's to heal my heart,
receive this karakia.

I give respect to the white haired elders,
with eyes of leaves and cloaks of snow.
I give respect to the white haired elders,
from the peaks of Aotearoa.

And so they journey'd to answer the call of stone,
a stone of stones.
A stone touched by the gods.
That bound together,
the healing colours of land, sea and stars.
And it carried the healing beauty of the mother star.
And it became known as pounamu.
